Lana Cannon

Lana will be placed with the Matinicus Island School to work on curriculum development and technology, expanding on the accomplishment of the previous Fellow, Anne Bardaglio.  Anne developed new curricula and helped bring in new resource materials and text books.  Lana will pick up where Anne left off, and help with the development of social studies, world history and science curricula, collaborating with other island schools to develop curricula that align with the Maine Learning Results.  She will also work on raising funds to buy more FOSS science kits, and will help catalogue books in the school library collection. During the summer months, Lana will assist the historical society in researching the possibility of creating a nonprofit, and will help secure resources to start archiving and preserving the current collection.

Lana grew up on Peaks Island, Maine, and received her B.A. in Environmental Studies with a focus on International Sustainable Development and a minor in Art and the Environment from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania in May, 2008.  She participated in various internships and study-abroad programs during college, and served as an intern with the Center for Economic and Environmental Development at Allegheny College. She spent five weeks with the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies studying sustainable development in desert ecologies in Israel and Jordan. She also participated in an experiential learning program in Alaska, studying geology, environmental science, anthropology and conservation biology, and observed a hawk-banding station at Hawk Ridge in Duluth, Minnesota.  Lana played on Allegheny's varsity women's lacrosse team and spent her summers working on Peaks Island.
