Susan was the very first Island Institute Fellow, based on Chebeague from 1999-2000 and working with fishermen to conduct sea sampling. Susan also taught and assisted in the Chebeague, Cliff and Long Island schools.
While on Chebeague, Susan:
- Conducted sea sampling data with fishermen on Chebeague, Cliff and Long Islands, collecting the first data of this kind for Casco Bay.
- Returned the analyzed data to the communities through reports and a series of public meetings.
- Taught Environmental Studies in the Chebeague, Cliff and Long Islands' schools.
- Developed and managed web sites for the schools.
- Assisted with the organization and supervision of school field trips.
After her Fellowship, Susan moved to California and taught Environmental Education before moving to Sardinia with her husband. In 2008, she returned to Portland and accepted a job with the Ocean Conservancy.
