We’re thrilled to share the exciting news: Island Institute has been named a nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet, an honor made possible by a thoughtful nomination from our friends at Maine Beer Company.
Founded in 2002 by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, 1% for the Planet connects businesses who seek to make a positive environmental change with non-profit organizations who can turn funds into impact. Business members commit to donating 1% of their annual sales to the nonprofit partners that they choose to support. To date, over 5,400 businesses worldwide have contributed $583 million dollars to 6,500 environmental partners and counting. Those non-profits represent a diverse set of organizations, all of whom have an eye on the planet and tackle problems relating to climate, food, land, wildlife, water, and pollution.
Maine Beer Company has been a proud member of 1% for the Planet since their founding in 2009. To date, Maine Beer Company has contributed over $3,000,000 to nonprofit organizations through the 1% for the Planet giving program, supplemented by guest donations. Their support spans six interconnected categories: animal protection, climate action, community support, equity and inclusion, land preservation, and outdoor access.
Partnerships are core to the mission and vision of Island Institute. Our programs focus on working in community, listening to the needs of individuals, businesses, and municipalities, and working together with these groups to find solutions to the challenges faced in a changing world. From electrification of the working waterfront, to weatherization of homes and schools, the environmental programs implemented by Island Institute wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of individuals, foundations, and businesses who share our commitment to the state of Maine and particularly our threatened coast and islands.
