The Island Institute, publisher of The Working Waterfront, is working to help fishermen and other business people diversify into shellfish and seaweed aquaculture on Maine’s islands and remote coastal communities.

Are you interested in growing shellfish? Have you thought about gaining a new source of income through growing mussels, oysters or seaweed? Institute staff want to help you get started and are now accepting applications to be part of the first cohort of prospective aquaculturists.

If you are currently fishing, aquaculture can fit well into your existing livelihood. Economists, scientists, and existing industry experts say that Maine’s growth potential in aquaculture is enormous. Now is a great time for fishermen and other motivated individuals to diversify your income with aquaculture. Fishermen and small business people from island and rural coastal communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

For more information about the benefits of participating, and to download an application, visit: https://www.islandinstitute.org/blog-post/announcing-aquaculture-cohort. Please submit your application by Nov. 10.
