Session descriptions
- February 1 – Critical Conversations – A deep dive into the skills needed to hold critical conversations
- February 8 – Entrepreneurial Skills – Three young entrepreneurs talk about their experience and explore what it takes to build a business.
- February 22 – Civic Engagement: From Activism to Action – A look at civic engagement and the steps needed to go from activism to community action. Speakers include: Amara Ifeji, National Geographic Young Explorer and mentor for young environmentalists; Hannah Noyes of Vinalhaven Solidarity; and Lucia Daranyi of Peaks Island and SolaRISE Portalnd.
- March 1 – Engaging Municipal Leaders – Three state and municipal leaders will share how to build consensus to move ideas forward and how to engage municipal leaders along the way. Speakers include: State Representative Genevieve McDonald, Selectperson Sarah Brake, and Jackman Town Manager Victoria Forkus.
Series details
Sessions are open to all high school and college students, as well as recent graduates, and will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on four Mondays from February 1st to March 1st (2/1, 2/8, 2/22, and 3/1).
There will be a break the third week of February to coincide with most high schools’ winter break schedules.
Each workshop will build off of the previous one, so we encourage you to take part in all four sessions.
Peer mentoring opportunities will also be available following the sessions.
About ILEAD
Through its Island Leadership Exploration and Development (ILEAD) workshops, the Island Institute offers education, training experiences, and individualized support for teams and organizations to increase local leadership skills and provide a peer network for information and resource sharing.
