Island Institute Fellow Alumna, Molly Siegel

Island Institute fellow Molly Siegel worked with the Town of Isle au Haut from 2018 until 2020, where she assisted the island with key community projects:

  • Developing plans to make Isle au Haut’s power grid more resilient
  • Increasing energy efficiency in municipal and public buildings
  • Strategizing around the island’s access to telehealth

“I wanted to reach out and meet new people, to put myself in situations where I could meaningfully interact with the community. It paid off— I built strong relationships on the island, many of whom are some of my closest friends to this day.”  – Molly Siegel, Island Institute Fellow Alumna

Originally from Bethel Maine, Molly came to the fellowship with an appreciation and understanding of rural Maine communities. Her motivation for joining the program was to find a post-collegiate experience where she could become a part of a new community, build strong relationships, and step outside of her comfort zone.

Molly’s work on Isle au Haut was related to climate change resilience, an area which remains relevant to Molly’s career. Currently, Molly serves as the Maine Climate Council Coordinator in the Governor’s Office of Policy, Innovation, and the Future. Molly believes her fellowship prepared her for her work because she learned how to independently manage projects and became strongly attuned to listening to communities, prioritizing their needs, and turning them into action.
