Adam Campbell moved to North Haven in the late 1990s to become a commercial fisherman, and in the process, he became the steward of a piece of land that had long belonged to his wife’s family. It is here, in 1999, that he started his family-owned and operated oyster farm, restoring the health of the small watershed upriver from Pulpit Harbor.
A long-time partner of Island Institute, Adam has grown his business substantially over the last 25 years. Recently, Island Institute helped fund a 1000-watt solar array that powers a micro-grid system on the farm which includes a battery generator that stores power for the shellfish nursery and refrigerator. The battery storage system also runs a Starlink system that keeps Adam and the North Haven community connected to the internet when the power goes down.
Adam’s business has become almost entirely renewable-run and plastic-free operation. He employs locals on the island, cleans his watershed, and teaches other marine entrepreneurs that aquaculture is a sustainable and reliable way to make a living on the water. In partnership with Island Institute, he aims to run North Haven Oyster Company completely on renewable energy.
