If Maine is indeed “Vacationland,” the state should be well-documented in postcards. And it is, as can be seen in Maine Memories: A Vintage Postcard Tour, by John Brunkowski and Michael Closen.
The couple had visited Maine in their RV for about 30 years, Closen says, “and came to enjoy it so much that we bought a summer home in Eastport, on Moose Island, about 15 years ago.”
The two have written eight coffee-table books on RV-related subjects, and used postcards to illustrate the works.
Maine Memories started with the realization that even though millions of tourist postcards depicting vintage Maine scenes had been produced, no book had organized them around the “Vacationland” theme, Closen said.
The book is available at Ebay and Amazon; from the publisher SchifferBooks.com; and at all five of the Sherman’s Bookstore; and at several other gift and tourist shops.
Brunkowski and Closen have traveled by RV for more than 30 years, visiting Canada, Mexico, and throughout the U.S., including two trips to Alaska. Brunkowski is a former registered nurse who worked in the operating room at a hospital, and Closen, a law school graduate, was a college professor, arbitrator and lecturer for 30 years.
